WEEK 3 UED102

MODULE 4

TOPIC 4 : MEMORY, LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

MEMORY AND LEARNING

💭According to Kenneth Higbee

"Remembering is hard work, and memory techniques do not necessarily make it easy, they just make it more effective'' (Van Blerkom,2009,p.39)

What is memory ?

Memory is our ability to encodestoreretain and subsequently recall information and past experiences in the human brain. It can be thought of in general terms as the use of past experience to affect or influence current behaviour.

THE STORAGE (RETAIN INFORMATION)

👉SENSORY MEMORY (SM)
Numerous incoming information from 5 senses will be stored in the sensory memory for an instant.if one pay attention to the stimul,it will go to the short-term memory. If one does not pay attention, then the information will be lost.

👉SHORT-TERM/WORKING MEMORY(STM)
Very limited storage from the sensory memory, information will be relayed to the short-term memory. While in the short-term memory, information must be rehearsed and repeated or use some active learning strategies in order to get information to long-term memory, otherwise information will be be forgotten.

👉LONG-TERM MEMORY(LTM)
This is unlimited and large storage from short-term memory, information moved to long-term memoryand stored here for later use.If the information not being used for some time.Forgetting may occur.
.

HOW FORGETTING COULD OCCUR

🧠 Did not pay attention to the information.

🧠 Did not understand the information.

🧠 Cramming (Last minute study)

🧠 Did not have good strategies

🧠 Interference cause when you have to remember two similar subject

🧠 Test anxiety when you are not well prepared for the test

MEMORY STRATEGIES

i.Massed Practice-Cramming,involves studying all the materials at one time.Do not have time to understand, remember, and organize the reading materials it is because short-term memory cant't sustain many information at one time.

ii.Spaced Practice- Involves space time over some period of time for studying.Spaced practice or distributed practice allows time for the information to consolidate in the long-term memory.Taking breaks between learning session allow you to think and organize the information.

  • Break reading  material down for some period of time.
  • Rehearsal by repeat the information many times
  • Elaboration strategies -
  1. Association- to associate or connectt each word or event with a person, place, thing, feeling or situation
  2. Acronyms/catchwords
eg : UM-Univertisty Malaya

      3. Acrostics/catchphrases
      4. Imagery- visualize the image of the information needed
       5. Organizational Strategies- organize the materials for example animals can be divided into 3                     types which are mammals, reptiles, amphibian
       6. Comprehension Monitoring Strategies- need to comprehend materials being read

STRATEGIES FOR IIMPROVING CONCENTRATION

1.1 CAUSES OF POOR CONCENTRATION
✅ Lack of attention
Lack of interest
Lack of motivation
 Distraction from others
 Uncomfortable environment
Physiological matters
 Physcological matters

1.2 USE MOTIVATIONAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGIES
Create interest in the work
Develop a positive attitude toward your work
 Use goal setting strategies
 Use time management strategies

1.3 CREATE A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Find a better location
Reduce multitasking
 Minimize distractions

1.4 DEAL WITH INTERNAL DISTRACTION
 Deal with personal problems
 Deal with competing activities

1.5 USE ACTIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES

1.6 MATCH YOUR LEARNING  STYLE TO THE TASK

1.7 MONITOR YOUR CONCENTRATION

You guys should start to make your concentration chart too you guys can realize what have been disturbing you and try to make improvement day by day eventhough it is just a little but make sure have progress 💛

SQ3R

SURVEY: Student review the text to gain initial meaning from the title, subtitle, chapter introduction or lead-in,boldfaced headings, graphs, charts, pictures, the final paragraph or summary and end-of-chapter material (study/discussion questions, vocabulary list)

QUESTION: Students try to form question based on the preview (survey).

READ: As student read, they need to look for answers to the question they formed during their preview of the text. These question, based on the structureof the text, help focus students' reading.

RECITE: After each section, pause, students will attempt to answer questions formed earlier. If students could not answer, then look back and find the answer in the section.Students should recite and rehearse the answer to their questions.Summarize the information. As student move through the text they should recite and rehearse the answer to their questions and make notes about their answer for later studying.
