CALCULATING GRADE POINT AVERAGE (CGPA)

GPA refers to the calculated average of the letter grades a student earns in each semester following a 0 to 4.0 scale. This is GPA calculation table.

Every semester, students receive a GPA based on the grades they earned in all their courses during that semester. The formula used for the calculations of the Grade Point Average (GPA) is as follows

To find GPA weighted by credit hours, follow these steps:

1. Multiply each numeric grade value by the number of credits the course was worth.
2. Add these numbers together.
3. Divide by the total number of credits you took

Example:

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) refers to the overall GPA, which includes dividing the number of quality points earned in all courses attempted by the total credit hours in all attempted courses.

FAILURE AND DISMISSAL

Students with extremely unsatisfactory academic performance will/can be dismissed from his/her study. The status of Dismissed (D) that can be given to students include:

WEEK 4 UED102

 MODULE 5

TOPIC 5: TAKING LECTURE NOTE

WHAT IS NOTE TAKING ?

Writing down ideas from lectures and readings in our own words.Using mind map also can make the note more efficient.

WHY TAKE NOTES ?👀

✎ Helps us to pay attention in class.

✎ Helps us study for quiz, test or final exam.

✎ Helps us improve our memory.

✎ Helps us take ownership of ideas.

✎ Helps us engage our senses.

✎ Helps us organize and process data and information.

✎ Helps the lecturers test student on how well they captured given information.

WHY REVIEW NOTES ?

Because we lose 80% of what we hear if it is not reviewed within a few hours.Other than that,to identify any questions for peers, the next class or to ask the professor.Furthermore, there is not enough time to absorb all the information given in class if it's not reviewed on regular basis.Lastly, think '' If I were tested on this lecture tomorrow, would I ace it? " Make it so !

TAKE TIME EVERY DAY TO REVIEW NOTES 🕮

WHY  "RECAPTURE'' NOTES AFTER CLASS ?

- Frees you up to write in quick, shorthand during class.

- An excellent test-prep strategy for reinforcing information, better than re-copying,this time you're digesting and rephrasing.

- Great for kinesthetic learners,can catch,gaps, look-up words.

- Prompts higher-level questions.

- Saves hours of studying and review the days before test.

INTRODUCTORY QUESTIONS

  • What materials do we need ?
✔️ Loose-leaf paper
✔️ Binder
✔️Folders with pockets
✔️ Pens,pencils,erasers,etc

BEFORE CLASS 🏫
  • Review the notes from the day before.
  • Review your reading assignment.
  • Make sure you have paper,text,pencils/pens and handout.
  • Write the date at the top of your paper for notes.
  • Leave spaces between the lines so that you can add information later.
PHYSICAL FACTORS

 ★ SEATING
 -Near the front and center
  • Better vision
  • Better hearing
-Avoid distraction
  • Doorways,windows glare, etc
  • Peers

HOW DO WE TAKES NOTES ?

📄 Date and label notes.

📄 Give ourselves space to write.

📄 Use abbreviations and symbol.

-What are some examples of symbols nd abbreviatitons ?

📄 Use an outline to show:

- Main ideas

- Supports

- Examples

📄 Use our own language

Here some of my notes before I discover the proper way to do notes and use various abbreviations and symbol ...

USEFUL ABBREVIATIONS

HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR CLASS ?
  • Do pre-reading and homework
  • Review syllabus
  • Preview previous notes
  • Look up key words prior to class
  • Plan on listening 80% of the time and 20% of the time
  • Write the date at the top of your paper for notes
  • Leave spaces between the lines so that you can add information later

WHILE TAKING NOTES

⭐ Be an aggressive ,not a passive,listener !
- Ask questions and discuss if its permitted
  • If not, jot questions in your notes
  • Seek out meaning
CONTS.,

Keen observers focus their attention on the details and make the most of their time during lectures by preparing and reviewing BEFORE THE LECTURE EVEN STARTS!
-Complete outside assignments-The more familiar you are with a subject, the easier it will be to uunderstand in class.
-Bring the right materials to the lecture

METHOD ON TAKING NOTE

Cornell Note taking

Two Column Method

Outlining

Mapping Method

Sentence Method

HOW DO WE REVIEW AFTER A CLASS ?
  • Review notes along with the book
  • Create our own examples
  • Discuss and compare notes with others
  • Re-write notes
  • Practice those skills you wish to develop
  • Ask professor for clarification

WEEK 3 UED102

MODULE 4

TOPIC 4 : MEMORY, LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

MEMORY AND LEARNING

💭According to Kenneth Higbee

"Remembering is hard work, and memory techniques do not necessarily make it easy, they just make it more effective'' (Van Blerkom,2009,p.39)

What is memory ?

Memory is our ability to encodestoreretain and subsequently recall information and past experiences in the human brain. It can be thought of in general terms as the use of past experience to affect or influence current behaviour.

THE STORAGE (RETAIN INFORMATION)

👉SENSORY MEMORY (SM)
Numerous incoming information from 5 senses will be stored in the sensory memory for an instant.if one pay attention to the stimul,it will go to the short-term memory. If one does not pay attention, then the information will be lost.

👉SHORT-TERM/WORKING MEMORY(STM)
Very limited storage from the sensory memory, information will be relayed to the short-term memory. While in the short-term memory, information must be rehearsed and repeated or use some active learning strategies in order to get information to long-term memory, otherwise information will be be forgotten.

👉LONG-TERM MEMORY(LTM)
This is unlimited and large storage from short-term memory, information moved to long-term memoryand stored here for later use.If the information not being used for some time.Forgetting may occur.
.

HOW FORGETTING COULD OCCUR

🧠 Did not pay attention to the information.

🧠 Did not understand the information.

🧠 Cramming (Last minute study)

🧠 Did not have good strategies

🧠 Interference cause when you have to remember two similar subject

🧠 Test anxiety when you are not well prepared for the test

MEMORY STRATEGIES

i.Massed Practice-Cramming,involves studying all the materials at one time.Do not have time to understand, remember, and organize the reading materials it is because short-term memory cant't sustain many information at one time.

ii.Spaced Practice- Involves space time over some period of time for studying.Spaced practice or distributed practice allows time for the information to consolidate in the long-term memory.Taking breaks between learning session allow you to think and organize the information.

  • Break reading  material down for some period of time.
  • Rehearsal by repeat the information many times
  • Elaboration strategies -
  1. Association- to associate or connectt each word or event with a person, place, thing, feeling or situation
  2. Acronyms/catchwords
eg : UM-Univertisty Malaya

      3. Acrostics/catchphrases
      4. Imagery- visualize the image of the information needed
       5. Organizational Strategies- organize the materials for example animals can be divided into 3                     types which are mammals, reptiles, amphibian
       6. Comprehension Monitoring Strategies- need to comprehend materials being read

WEEK 2 UED102

 MODULE 3

Topic 3 :TIME MANAGEMENT

Hello guys, welcome back ! today we will talk about time management. It is important as a student to manage time properly because lack of time can lead to failure.Let's get start it.

What is time actually ?

Time is something that cannot buy with money. We cannot see time but it is so valueable to use.Time also known as stubborn llusion that continued progress of existence and events in our daily life.Time will never wait for us that's why we need to spend time wisely and make
sure every second was filled with good activities.

Definition of time

⏰ Noun- the indefinite continued progress of existance and events in the                 past, present and future

⏰ Verb- plan,schedule,or arrange when something or occasion should happen or  be done

Definition of Time Management

5 STRATEGIES (STUDY SYSTEM)

  1. Weekly schedule
  2. Daily planner
  3. Semester calendar
  4. Academic and Personal life
  5. Avoid procrastination

Everyone should have their own schedule for example I use my calendar in my mobile phone to create my own schedule so that I wont miss important thing and keep my time organize.Any mobile phone nowadays can create this so there is no excuse for you to start create your own schedule.

Personal weekly schedule

This is my semester calendar that has been provided by UiTM :

https://hea.uitm.edu.my/v3/downloads/calendars/academic/Kalendar%20Akademik%20Kumpulan%20B%20Program%20Pra-Diploma%2C%20Diploma%2C%20Sarjana%20Muda%2C%20Sarjana%20Oktober%202020%20-%20Februari%202021.pdf

What is procrastination ?

Procrastination is the act of delaying or putting off tasks until the last minute, or past their deadline. Some researchers define procrastination as a "form of self-regulation failure characterized by the irrational delay of tasks despite potentially negative consequences."

We should'nt normalize procrastinate in our daily life because once we do it, we will addict to it.This will ruin your life because procrastinate is kind a waste your time and it will effect to achieve your goals.
